FDA Review of IVC Filters
In 2010, the FDA initiated a safety alert and reported that it had received nearly a thousand complaints about IVC Filters. The government agency found complications often occurred when the device was left inside the body too long. The FDA recommended removing the retrievable device as soon it is no longer needed to prevent a pulmonary embolism.
In 2014, the FDA issued another safety alert and, this time, suggested retrievable IVC Filters be removed between 29 and 54 days after implantation if the patient’s risk for a pulmonary embolism has passed. It also announced that is collecting additional data, requiring manufacturers to participate in the PRESERVE (PREdicting the Safety and Effectiveness of InferiorR VEna Cava Filters) study or conduct post-market surveillance to help address IVC Filter Device safety concerns.
